Crunching turf

hi all,

I've just finished laying some artificial turf.  I compacted a load of blue metal dust under the turf and laid the turf directly on top of the blue metal.  It's come up pretty good though now when I walk on the grass I can feel the blue metal dust crunching under my feet....

Is there something I've done wrong of is this usually how it is?  I thought of putting a small bed of sand between the blue metal dust and the turf to get rid of the crunching noise..??

Any advice would be appreciated…

Cheers

Wayne

who did the same DIY install with cracker dust - He tells me he finished the prep by dampening the top of the dust. He then put some silica sand on top of the grass pile, to about 80% of the pile height, brushed it in - All good apparently.

Yeah I compacted the blue metal dust then I dampened it.  Problem is I think I may have damped the top too much which has caused the dust to wash down through, leaving all the small blue metal on top... is this a common problem if you wet it too much?

I've got some silica sand for the top of the grass.  If I was to add sand underneath which is better to use?  The silica sand, yellow or white sand?

Also, is the blue metal supposed to act as a weed repellent aswell?

cheers

maybe mix some cement in with the metal dust.  install as a drymix get it level then light wet down.

should give you a free draining no crunch solid surface.

did you get your trade card?

 Hey mate,

As the others have mentioned, have you added the white washed beached sand on top? This not only holds the grass down but also lifts the grass pile so it sits up to the correct height. Etc 40mm...

Give us a Pm if you need any more help, I Own a Artificial Turf company and can point you in the right direction
