Crab pots for the swan (question about the rope & floats)

Hey guys,

Because of the variance in depth when hunting crabs around the lower reaches of the swan river do you use one length of rope attached permanently to a float / bouy? If so how long is the optimal length? I've heard of people using different configurations of floats / ropes so that you can take the floats off while transporting the pots and/or change the length of rope whilst crabbing so you dont have massive ammounts of surface line.

Cheers in advance!

if you ask me you want a resonable amount of line on the surface so you dont have to drive over your pot and scare the crabs out

dont think thats a big issue

dont think thats a big issue in deep water . you want to be lifting straight up so none can escape.

extensions are good - loop to loop . have some 5 and 12 meter lenghts to add to the 5 on the pot

works for me anyway

yeah whenever we go crabbing

yeah whenever we go crabbing i tend to atleast try and lift the pots vertical so that the little bastards dont scuttle out the sides of the pot as its coming up

with the loop to loop, how do you have the float fixed to the other end ?

the loop on the float rope is big enough to go over the float . you dont need big floats so the loop isnt that big .

as snapper says cable ties are a good option as well.

EDIT - loop on float rope not pot rope

cable ties

when fishing shallow water simply coil the rope up and fix it with a cable tie! then when heading back out deeper just cut the cable tie

I got the spool floats and have 20m of rope wound on them. Drop the pots, they spin on the surface unwinding till the pot hits the bottom then slip the cut of wheel barrow tube back over it to stop any more unwinding

I use 2litre milk bottles filled with expanda foam as the floats. Have a short length of tied to a shark clip to attach the floats to the loop on the rope.

I also have a box of rope extensions that i tie to the ropes on the crab nets. Have a loop one end straight (melted ) other end.

Just use a crayfishermans knot to tie them on.

how does it work with the spool floats ? what do you use to stop the rope uncoiling after the pot hits the river bed?

I cut up an old or cheap wheel barrow tube like squid rings and use them as lacky bands over the coiled up rope on the spool.

Spool floats also

Mon, 2013-01-28 01:15

Just do a loop over itself at the length you want. Two or three loops stops slippage. I run about 24 meters in total length. This way I can drop in 5 meters in the sound or go to 20 meters in the deep sections of the swam.

My other advice, buy thicker rope. Pulling 10 pots for a few hours will have you wishing for thicker rope. At least my girlie hands love it ;)

Mon, 2013-01-28 16:06

haha how thick would you recomend ? i was thinking 6 or 8mm, depends how much the floats can hold i guess. i wanted to load them up with about 25m a pop.

when you say a loop over itself you mean the float yeah ?
