CPAP advice (not fishing related)
Submitted by scano on Mon, 2015-11-02 19:19
Hi all,
although not not fishing related I thought I would ask the advice of the fellow fishwrecked community about CPAP machines. Just recently finished a trial of a cpap device and I was amazed at the difference in how you feel after sleeping with one for a few months and then going without (like a good woman I suppose. Hahah)
has as anyone else trialled, bought a machine recently? If so any feedback on brands or even how they go with it in general. Lastly do Medicare or your private health insurer offer any form of rebate?
Any other fishwrecked members feedback or advice would be welcomed
scano

I have a resmed machine,
I have a resmed machine, fully auto. Cost $2500. You get bugger all from Medicare and depends on the health insurer. Hbf didn't give me much. Have been told that you can claim it in your tax as fatigue management for work reasons. Apparently the tax office is trying to stop this but. It's a good machine with a 7 year warranty. Got it from the sleep specialist at the Mount hospital.

Best thing I ever did
Similar to what Tradewind above says it changed my life. That was 15 years ago. The number of disrupted sleep events I was having was measured at the higher end of the scale, as I recall around 80-90 per hour. The CPAP machine changed all this. I have some tales of involuntarily nodding off that are frightening. My only regret is that I didn't know abour sleep apnoea 25 years earlier. I have a Fisher and Paykel CPAP machine and that has performed well. As I recall my private health insurance did make a contribution and I was left with the gap.

Another user and tick for Resmed
got mine about 3.5 years ago. It took me a long while to get used to it and took me a while to find the best mask for me (lots of options)
same as above- cost about 2.5k and HBF paid me about $700. Well worth the investment.

Cheers for the feedback fellas
Yeah just finished a cpap trial myself and was amazed at the difference when you now have to live without it (temporarily till I purchase my own)

Hi Scano, you wont look back. Just have to put up with the missus snoring Ha Ha, as i am quiet as a mouse.
Couple of my mates bought them from the States, had no problems at all, saved alot of coin.
Good luck

Cpap
Hi Scano,
I have servere sleep apnea and I did find it very hard to adjust to using the cpap but is well worth it once you are used to it, I have a phillips and recently brought a Transcend travel cpap, I got $600 back from HIF but I do beleive other health insurers will give you $700 every 5 years. If you want to buy online it is much cheaper, my phillips machine cost $1500 and $250 for a mask but I have recently seen the phillips on 1800cpap for $300 for a refurbished machine. Good luck Scott.

resmed
I got resmed9. My interruptions were 93 an hour. Once using the machine it went down to 1-3 an hour. Had to trial 6-7 masks to finally get the right one. Been over 2 years now. Sometimes I might fall asleep before putting the mask on and I really feel the difference. I still snore even with mask and chin strap.
