Cost of boating in Western Australia
Submitted by dawsy on Thu, 2017-12-07 17:55
Just received my tinny rego for the year at $120.
For 6 trips a year in a tiny boat, thats $20 an outing just for the tinny 'rego' excluding the other myriad of costs like trailer licencing and maintenance.
Getting rid of the tinny would go a long way to a nice overseas holiday. Little incentive for thriving business in this state.
I have had many people from eastern states mind boggled at the cost of boating here. Apparently NSW boat ramps are owned by the state, not by greedy councils looking to flog waterside real estate for development.
Casual fishing has been deterred in this state. Meanwhile New Zealand...
Thats like $50 to put your kids in a dingy for a spin for an hour. Elvis has left the building.

put it this way. if you can
put it this way. if you can put a price on enjoyment with the odd feed of fresh seafood imo its well worth it.
if you realy going out fishing od diving the price shouldnt matter. if price was a factor there would be a lot less boats out there.
just my 2 cents worth.
bugger the price just go and enjoy

If I calculated what I spent
If I calculated what I spent on fishing I would be inclined to sell all my gear and take up something cheaper like a top fuel dragster I think.

Just payed the boat rego, trailer rego and boat insurance. Just enough change from 3k for a pint on the way home tonight. :-)

$50 Geez that’s cheap entertainment for a family, imagine if you went out a dozen times a year that would be $25 what a bargain. Can’t imagine where else you could get that value for a family outing.
My spots are so secret even the fish don't know about them !

Shit now you got me thinking
Shit now you got me thinking about what it costs me
Yeah it is dear, for some its a passtime but for me its a way of life I guess
Unfortunately we certainly will continue to get fleeced more and more, "til the pips squeek" as they say but until all the pips squeek in unison nothing will happen...

Last girlfriend...
...cost me $70 a day in cigarettes and vodka. Think about THAT before you sell your boat! (Still have MY boat, though!)

Boating is still a lot
Boating is still a lot cheaper than danging up heroin and hiring hookers. Lucky for me I got a payrise this year so I can afford to do all three at once plus pay my parking fees at Hillarys... or are they launching fees. I keep forgetting.

All great answers I have a
When we already pay ramp fee in our rego, then $11 to launch a tinny. Sorry, thats a rort. All the beach launch options have gone.
Maybe I remember the days when we used to pay nothing for most of this?
Im concerned for jobs in WA in industries like the boating industry. Is this why kids say home and play video games? $50 for a tinny run?

Merman, Is Dawsy dragging
Merman,
Is Dawsy dragging his boat to the ramp ( well within the vicinity, just out of parking fee's way ) by hand, looking at the ocean and thinking fuck that was a good day out!!
Or
Is he driving to the ramp - buying bait, ice, booze, fuel, sunblock, tackle etc etc etc
So now lets jack the $$ per outing up signifigantly and continue down the path of "Fuck its expensive" to go boating in WA....
In fact if any Politician had any idea how much us ammos line the states pocket through the love of what we do then like mentioned above they wouldn't allow greedy Councils to tack on a "launching/parking" fee now would they....
Common sense went out the window a long time ago....

Cost
i reckon each launch costs me between $100-$200. By the time I factor in fuel (car and boat),
bait if I need it, parking, a few beers and tank fills etc....plus my regular deckies don't normally chip in.
it adds up fairly quickly.
it's just the cost for doing what we enjoy.

Cost
If it's about cost then buy a fish at the shops, or even a pack of fish fingers maybe?
Not many activities you can do for $25.

Like I said, Im comparing
Like I said, Im comparing west to east,
Its costs way more than $25 to go fishing in a tinny for an hour. Thats just the licencing the bath tub. Its a $120 per annum to licence a yak with a motor. My tinny is smaller than most yaks.
Understand the point and the impact it makes on economics and jobs. As ownership decreases so do jobs and tax revenue.
Actually there is truck loads of activities you can do for less than $25, like play video games among many others. But the point is, the cost bwteen east and west.
Some of this money actually leaves as expenditure outside the WA macro economy when the local expenditure driver of fishing decreases. For many of us, the driver for many our vacations locally have always been fishing opporunities by us and our parents.
No fishing, feck it, just go to Bali, or my case, Europe for three months.

The price of Family & Friends lifting a lovely Pinky/Dhu or even a good feed of table fish = PRICELESS.

Right now, I can asure you
I worked out if I flog all my licenced trailers etc which I cant tow all at once and potentially the mrs car who catches the train, I can go on an overseas holiday each year. Maybe a barra impoundment trip. Govt will go licence revenue is down, just put up licences again.
Right now, I can assure you tourism in WA has some serious underlying issues. WA tourism in decline apparently. Jobs in decline. All these little things make impacts on jobs all because some public servant goes, just put the licences up in a desperate effort to collect state taxes which should have gone in place of GST.
There is way too much presumption money will stay in the macro economy each time pollies descide to penalise anglers and boaties.

If the Govt starting stocking
If the Govt starting stocking dams with native fish like bass and introduced $8 weekend freshwater fishing licences like they do over East towns like Waroona, Harvey, Dwellingup etc we would see an instant boom in domestic tourism pumping money into those towns that are hurting especially since the Forrest Hwy was constructed and the SW Hwy became a ghost road.

We havent even touched on
We havent even touched on the maintaining of gear ie boat and trailer....
I bet half the blokes on this site own a specific car/4wd to suit their requirements to go camping/fishing towing a boat....
It all adds up!!
I used to sports fish, chase fish for fun but now its all about the freezer....
My 3 yr old would eat fish daily i reckon and i rarely buy it so keeping the freezer well stocked is a priority because good fish is hard to beat!

Per kilo Fish price..
I always reckon if your worried about cost then its cheaper to buy fish than catch it. Given Im running 2 boats and 2 4wds to myself Im up around the $100 plus per kilo easy!!
It doesnt help that Im addicted to shiny things in tackle stores and really only fish for a feed - dont stock the freezer as prefer to go out next time and catch fresh.
But, as long as your paying cash for the toys you cant go too far wrong - youve got to live, and its a great lifestyle - no matter the cost!
Cheers,
Disco.
