Cockburn Sound Winds

G'day guys, I'm sure its probably been brought up before -

I've been boating for about 3 years now but quite new to Cockburn Sound. Sniped a day off tomorrow and forcasted winds are to be about 15-20 knots blowing south early on and south easterly by late morning.

I'm normally out at the rocks around woody point anchored up. Whats everyones opinion on winds there? Whats too much and which directions are/aren't safe?

I have a 4.8m runabout but any swell over about 1.5m can begin to give her a bit of struggle.

Thank you everyone, good luck this week!

Matt

 It will make it pretty

It will make it pretty lumpy, especially a straight southerly and you get anywhere fast, but assuming you have a bit of freeboard not something I'd feel unsafe in.

Difference between sweet and chop

Mon, 2016-11-28 22:19

Just make sure you're understanding the difference between the swell, and the wind chop on top of the swell.
Generally in Cockburn Sound you're sheltered by the swell that comes in from the SW/W, but it can still get choppy ("lumpy")
If it were me and I was heading out to test it out I'd be heading south first so that at least I could come home with the chop/wind; punching into it on the way home is never fun.
1.5m wind chop should be do-able (possibly a little rough though in a pressed ally or even plate boat) - just remember to re-check before you launch - no sense in creating unnecessary angst and if you have to ask yourself if it's ok - wait for a better day, or better yet - launch at East Freo (Leeuwin Ramp) and use the shelter of the river if you want a day out on the water. I hear they're catching whiting in the Swan..
I tend to err on the cautious side - that's just me - even more so if I'm taking the kids or wife out.

Cockburn sound is almost

Tue, 2016-11-29 08:27

Cockburn sound is almost always safe enough for a day out. comfort level might be a problem. The only wind that can cause a problem in there is a strong northerly as it funnels down from the coast and can create some decent size chop. Just find a spot to tuck in out of the wind around one of the islands if it rough

The wind sock at CPBA was solid horizontal and the sound was more like a washing machine.....

Wise move

If in doubt sit it out.... Beats making the news for all the wrong reasons. There will always be plenty of non windy days to have some fun in the water!
