Christmas Island

G’day guys,
I’m in the early stages of planning a trip to Cocos and Christmas Islands in September/October this year.
I have read the Fishing is mind blowing at Christmas Island!
Looking for any advice... are there any land base options for throwing lures? Any recommended charter operators that do single days that won’t leave me crippled in debt?
Long shot, but is there anyone out there willing to take an extra set of hands in exchange for some cash?
I know my way around a boat, have a 640 myself and have fished extensively over my whole life!
Feel free to PM me also!
Cheers!
Sam

I used to visit Xmas Is for work and we took some light tackle up a few times and fished the cliffs around the settlement. We only caught blue trevally on lures and leatherjackets with bait. I wished we'd tried ballooning with the water dropping off to 100m+ only 100m from shore. A land based wahoo would have just about set me up to retire from fishing altogether. The fishing shop did run a charter which was very expensive but did include accommodation. They had stopped doing it at the time, but that was about 6 years ago.

There used to be a fishwrecked member
Taylor Fishing............he helped me heaps, was going to take me out but a last minute issue prevented him doing so BUT in typical fishwrecked fashion arranged for me to go out with a mate who worked for the water board ......got wahoo and lost a huge dogtooth that was unstoppable. Hard to fish from shore as the limestone ledges are lethal and high. Cocos offers heaps of options for shore based, jetties with huge GT's, silveries, even cobia. Were no charter operators and with even fewer visitors even less likely today. Try the Golden Bosun for meals (huge) or the Chinese restaurant ......don't know if the restaurant run by the Malays still open on Home Island if it is it is a MUST do !

Thanks Sunshine!
I have gotten in touch with the local Cocos boys on FB, hopefully can tee up a trip out with them. There is very little info about fishing there other than lots of sharks, bones in the lagoon and no charters! From what i read the GT's know there way around a pylon too?!
Is Taylor Fishing his FW handle? Ill try and get in touch! Sounds like you had a good day on the water then! Thinking I'll pack a heavy spin and a jig stick, maybe the missus wont notice it... haha
Cheers for the heads up on feed too. Where did you stay?

Yes that was his moniker on fishwrecked
hadn't thought of using Facebook, if you dive there was a great dive operator on Christmas.
The people there were very friendly and helpful so making advance contact through FB might well secure you a boat trip, we got our first hoo only minutes from the ramp, you won't believe the drop off.....to thousands of feet deep. Cleaning station around the corner near the navy moorings (where locals all clean their fish) has the biggest GTs I have ever seen, sharks there also but safe to snorkel

Look up saltwater prodigy on
Look up saltwater prodigy on fb. He is at Christmas Island. Best bet would be to get some accurate up to date info as things seem to change there fairly quickly.
Does anyone know where the love of god goes, when the waves turn the minutes to hours?

Shorefire wasn't operating when we went
only a couple of years ago, ignored all my emails, was on the island but locals told us he had lost interest......any recent info might indicate this has changed

Xmas Island
Hey mate,
sorry, haven't checked fishwrecked for ages but heard you were looking for info on Christmas Island. I'm happy to answer any questions that you might have. I don't currently have a boat myself but know plenty of guys that might be going out if the weather is good. It normally is that time of year. Bring heavy gear as the fish are big and the sharks are hungry. I fish 80lb braid with 200lb leader. A friend scored a 250 kg black marlin the other day and 60kg plus tuna are not rare. Try Shorefire. He is the best but not sure if he is still doing charters?? Also try contacting Flynn (saltwater prodigy) on FB. Don't know if he ever takes people out but he certainly fishes a lot and has a nice boat.
any questions just let me know mate and I'll try to check the site a bit more regularly :)
