Carnarvon...... Inshore Options?

G'day fellas

New member here.

After 15 years in Kununurra it's time for a change of scenery, looks like I'll be moving to Carnarvon around the end of the year. I been reading a bit about fishing down there, lots of stuff about Quobba and Gnarloo as well as Bernier and Dorre Islands. Whats the fishing like in close to the mainland around Carnarvon? Is the fishing good or do you realy have to travell out to the islands for a feed and some fun?

I have a 6m Quintrex center consul that I've modified to suit the big rivers and mainly calm sea's of the Kimberley and NT, it will handle choppy conditions but is a real handfull in swell. The main prob is that it is powered by a 225 Optimax (that should read overpowered) and mounted to the transom via a Quicksilver hydraulic jack plate that lifts the motor verticaly. The problem is that it cavitates in large swell and can become very hard to controll. I can remove the jack plate which should make it ride better in rough conditions but I haven't tryed that yet.

anyway, here's a pic of my Qunnie Tinny.

Yep, no shortage of power on this rig mate.  I was searching the net for info on the boat ramps down there and that led me to this site, via Carnarvonites post on the new one being built.

Blue ocean?

Sun, 2011-09-11 22:44

B een a while since we had a blue ocean in close anyway. Slightest bit of swell and it al turns brown again.

Inshore fishing is sometimes a hit or miss affair, not much reef about until you head up towards the Blowholes area, Beejaling shoals, Fitzroy and Darwin reefs are quite shallow but can turn on some good fish---about 17nm north and onwards.

To the south, 10nm is the Lady Joyce/ Joyous wreck, good at night or if you are the first boat there after a windy spell when no one can get out. Gets a fair hammering but there are little patches and channels not far from it to try if its too crowded.

Closer to home is the barge wreck and a couple of ballast dumping grounds, the river mouth, channels and the 8 mile that also turn up pinkies and blacks with the odd cod.

Heading to the islands is a run of no less than 26nm to the gap or 29nm to Koks island in the north. There is the Muck / Shit / Mud/ cod hole about 3nm off Red Cliff bay but unless you can read your sounder the little bits of bottom can be hard to find

In close on the eastern side of the islands over the coral you can get bluebone/ baldies, spanglies, blacks and pinkies on the bottom plus mackies trolling or on floaters, same goes for Koks island but mainly pinks there.

The west side is open to the swell and may cause you heaps of problems with the way you boat is set up.

It can and does get very nasty very quickly on the inside of the islands once the sea breeze cranks up. The waves are very short and sharp with  "no back"on them so each time you come down with a whallop that nearly drives your knees up your clacker.

There are plenty of little bays to anchor up in overnight but remember that you are not allowed to camp directly on the islands, what a lot of people do is store their gear onshore, go fishing then come back and lay the swags out on board for the night, dump them onshore again in the morning and pick them up for the run home.

The new ramp car park is being surfaced now so hopefully it should be open in the near future though sadly without the modifications suggested at the recent meeting.

Look forward to catching up when you get here and giving you a few starters to get you going.

Thanks for the reply

Thanks for the reply Carnarvonite, it sounds like there is plenty of options for day trips out on the boat with my girfriend and her boy. The islands will be great for a couple of days camping on the boat when the weather is right.

We get the short and sharp waves up here, mainly when the dry season easterly is blowing against the tide. The good thing is that there's plenty of creeks/rivers/bays in the Cambridge Gulf or along the coast to shelter from it.

It's great to see that the Gov/local counsil are prepared to blow tax/rate payers cash on poorly designed projects without consulting people who have the knowledge to do it right the first time down south as well as up here. Oh well, it will be better than the Wyndham boat ramp anyway (although the last upgrade has made it much more user friendly)

Last week I towed the boat

Wed, 2011-11-09 16:57

Last week I towed the boat down to Carnarvon, my girlfriend towed the camper trailer, the truck with the funiture arrived and we set up the new place. It was a busy week but I did have a little bit of time to look around.

I also had a chance to wet a line, got up early and droped my little rubber ducky boat in off the beach near the fish factory. Ran out to the end of the 1 mile jetty and lobbed a mullie in with my Quantum Cabo/Diawa 4500 spin outfit. As soon as it hit the bottom I was onto a fish, after fighting it for a few minutes I had about a 1m long Jewie (ooppps... they call them mulloway down south). Un hooked him and let it swim away. Next cast was exactly the same as the first.

Third cast I got a hit at the bottom, it pulled slow and steady at first and then took off once it realised it was hooked. Turned out to be a 1.25m mulloway, about 30 odd lbs I think.

Back in Kununurra now working hard, cant wait to get back down there.

Here is a pic.

I kept the last fish, I don't think I'll bother keeping another mulloway. Not the best eating fish going around.

Happy fisherman!

Off to a good start. Mate went out to the barge wreck the other day, school of big mulloway turned up and gave them a treat. They said that they must have released at least 30 fish each in a four hour session all over 20kg, keeping one and a few black and pink snapper.

Sounds like a cracker of a session, I'll have to give it a go when I get back down there.

There seems to be plenty of mulloway around which is good fun. I'd like to try hooking one with jigging gear, the jetty looks like a good place to practise. the best part is that it's only minutes from my new place (Brockman) and it's so easy to have the little boat on the water and catching decent sized fish too.
