Carnarvon Fishing

Hi all.
I will be moving to Carnarvon in early July and was just wondering if anyone can give me some information on what the fishing is like? I will be taking a 4.85m boat. Is there much fishing just offshore or do you need to head all the way to the islands? Also, are the islands clear enough to dive and to spear or is the water still murky?
Any advice, tips or potential fishing buddies would be much appreciated as I don't know anyone up there.
Thanks in advance.

Hi, I've been up there the
Hi,
I've been up there the last few years for the Carnarfin fishing competition.
We usually fish either down the south end of the Islands or accross towards the gap. That being said the closest is the gap area at around 23+nm. The south end would be one hell of a trip in your boat!
There is fishing around the Lady Joyce wreck, about 8nm i think from memory. We've caught snapper, trevally and a black jew out there.
There is also some barges that we haven't looked for but are apparently not far from town. Obviously the local crew know of these spots.
Can't comment on the clarity of the water near the islands as we didn't end up going too closely to them this year.
Hopefully some of this helps. If there's anything else you'd like to know I'll help if possible.
Ps, the crabbing just out of the harbour is really good! Just mind the tiger sharks taking the odd net haha

Carnarvon
The Lady Joyce wreck is 10nm and 210deg from the outside cardinal mark.
The barge wreck is approx. 600 metres from the outside cardinal mark.
When you get there drop in to the visitors centre, they have an info sheet that includes the gps points for the above plus about a dozen more close in spots
Oyster creek and One Tree point are both creek fishing spots that produce jacks and slimy cod.
Beejarling shoals to the north is good but can make for a lumpy ride home if your weather predictions are wrong

I've been up here for six months now. Let's just say you're in for an eye opener ! . Fishing is good up here . You can fish the islands in your boat no worries, just have to pick your times . The water is clear enough to dive n spear over there . You can have a shitload of fun fishing within a 10 mn radius from town. Had a good trolling session the other day collecting Golden Trevally between 900-1100 mm long, catch release ,troll , catch release troll.... repeat until you run out of steam . Lots of inshore creek fishing and land based stuff too. Also Gnaraloo is only two hours up the road!!
My wife understands why I clean my rods n reels in the shower....
