I don't like any politicians but I do get some kind of weird joy out of Kev pitching his old job back from the redhead.

I am, as I've said, merely competent. But in an age of incompetence, that makes me extraordinary.

Bit bloody late
Sort of like taking the helm of the Titanic after it hit the berg. Rudd's a fool for even taking the job. Remember the only person to enter parliament with honest intentions was " Guy Fawkes"

Was reading a few news
Was reading a few news articles with the comments mentioning deficit and confusing it with debt then I realised that most people who believe the line that we MUST have a surplus at all times probably have a home loan, a car loan and a credit card! Debt is not always inherently bad, as long as you can service it and its working for you (and we're in a good position to service it). What benefits we get from being in debt are of course up to individuals to make up their own mind (e.g. Say whether you think the NBN is worth it). Of course, lots of differing opinions over which is good and which is bad but I'm not interested in discussing that. Leave whether individual spendings are a waste to elsewhere. I'm only talking about the general concept of deficit not necessarily being inherently bad. Our ratio of deficit/GDP is 0.8% btw.

The other one is mining. People banging on about how we can't touch the "golden goose". Mining makes up just over 1/3rd of our exports (2/3rds is other stuff) and 5.6% of our GDP. It's not an insignificant number but its probably not as high as most people might expect (I.e. carrying the economy). About 2.2% of people are employed by mining so it's not a huge sector of the workforce depending on mining for an income (although on average they benefit by a great income that's hard to get in general).
As for general "economic failure", for the last say 8 years we've had the lowest unemployment in decades. We rode through the GFC pretty damn well thanks to spending actually (admittedly with some waste due up haste that could have been more efficiently spent). Compare this to the crash of the US unemployment rate which hasn't recovered (although they have gotten back to GDP growth). Lots of other metrics to the economy, but an interesting stat at least showing we're not all loosing out jobs. I know there's a lot of Gilliard/Labor haters here, but I'm wondering how have people been directly affected by this?
Would be nice to have a middle party. No complete right wing bullshit, a moderate stance on spending (but not completely neglecting infrastructure setup) and science based outcomes on fishing reserves. Most people seem to vote for a party based on "feel" I.e. labor = spend, liberal = manage economy, but those metrics are not necessarily true.
One thing about the ALP, even for die hard supporters, you have to admit, they've been pretty shithouse at marketing themselves lately. Personally, while they've had a few stuff ups and mismanagements, they have done some good stuff lately (NBN, NDIS, Gonski, etc) that they never seem to mention. In their eyes they must have things they've done well, but they don't play them up.
Hmmm, anyways, food for thought. Lets see what the Coalition (note: Not Liberals) do when they most likely get in. I hope they're not as negative as they currently are (i.e. take a bit more moderate position).
