Broken Graphite Rod
Submitted by ledge64 on Thu, 2010-07-15 20:53
Went squidding at Hillarys near the lighthouse and found to much weed in the water so decided to try inside the harbour, first cast caght on the jetty and using only 3kg Penn line expected to lose my Yo-Zuri, but my super duper expensive graphite rod snapped below the ferrule when trying to retreive the jig NOT HAPPY JAN :(
can anyone advise the best and cheapest way to fix my rod, thanks.

why would you be trying to
why would you be trying to snap the line with a bend in the rod ???
wind up tight with the rod tip pointing straight down the line .. grasp the spool and then pull straight back ... expensive way to learn this

one thing i've learnt is
one thing i've learnt is graphite certainly ain't solid and unbreakable/indestructable
If I spent half as long fishing , as I do reading this bloody forum , I'd be twice the fisherman I am.

Might be worth pointing out also that graphite is a far superior material to fish with as the rod compliments good anglers but is succeptible to breakage due to point loading ( read:highsticking) for less experienced fishos then glass will afford a lot more abuse while generally lacking in performance.
depends if you understand what attributes to breakage - only eer broken rods that i broke out of missuse.
remember the 90% rule - if the fish is down at vertical rod dont go higher than horizontal - alternatively if the fish is perfectly horizontal( not possible unless your fishing uphill) then the rod cant go beyond vertical -thus 90% diference.
You should know about graphite being indestuctable!

also
you dont hurt a fish nearly asmuch by highsticking - to put maximum pressure on a fish - lead it with your rod and get the most hurt through the butt of the rod - the tip will just absorb an anglers errors - while only slight, all anglers including myself but done to an acceptable level - no breakage.
have a look at the photo on the first post in "Jewel rod" - thats as high as you would want to go or risk a return trip to the tackle shop.
dont wanna sound like i know everything just trying to help those that dont grasp the concept - so please take it in good faith.

What brand and model of rod is it?
Sounds like a 2pc, you're probably better off buying a new bottom half.

We do!! All rods break, its
We do!! All rods break, its just how you break it. Ive owned graphite and fibreglass rods, inc Ugly Stiks. Ive broken both graphite and fibreglass through stupidity, highsticking and overloading with heavy line.
Best to learn how to treat your rods right and how to break off snags without loading the rod.

the only time i have
the only time i have highsticked was the other night when i was hooked up to a 40 odd kg ray hhaha. the rod wouldnt have been able to take it for much longer, so took it carefully at the tail end of the fight! that was on a composite rod aswell. never highstick to retrieve a lure, or snag. fast track to snapping a rod. graphite is very succeptible to snaps, so you have to be careful and fish 'professionally', and most of all, dont do anything stupid.

Reece thats fine as long as your not putting too much pressure on the line or the rod .. fine braid can cut your fingers very easy .. and it hurts like a b!tch :(

if you dont want to break
if you dont want to break rods stick to the old school type rods lol like solid glass or semi glass semi graphite solid tip rods, wont regret it! i seen like 3 graphite rods broken without effort, graphite and sharp jerking motions is a big no no especially the light 1-5kg ones.

interesting
all but maybe 3 or so of my rods are graphite. Other than in certain fishing situations, I wouldn't go back to f/g even if you payed me.
Sounds like the forum is full of unco's if they are forever dropping their rods.......

i only broke one graphite
i only broke one graphite rod, and that was cos i was being a dick with it when i first bought it. i have a Daiwa Procaster V (now discontinued) and i have thrashed that rod so much and it hasnt given in. ive dropped it so many times on the rocks and the ground, not even the slightest hint of snapping. as huggy said, there must be so many careless and uneducated people here if they think f/g is better than graphite. i find f/g rods really sloppy for my lighter work, because im so used to the graphite.

Graphite rods are awsome if treated right, definately better than glass action wise.hooking into a herring on a 4kg outfit feels like a 3kg tailor.I wouldn't even attempt a straight rod snap just cut the bloody line.$100 rod vs $5 Yo-zuri?

Graphite is great
Not fragile at all, it is dependant on how you treat your gear. If you are fishing on rocks or reef and tend to be a bit enthusiastic with putting your rod down, then yeah they will break.
Have fished reef from Perth to Quobba without a problem on graphite and the only FG rods I have are for my kids.
Best action and great on the back and arms (when you are trying to hold a 13ft FG rod in the face of a stiff SW with an 8oz sinker, you certainly appreciate the light weight of a graphite) . And on the boat just fantastic.

Out of around 30 rods I
Out of around 30 rods I would have maybe 6 or 7 glass. Only thing I use them for is line class fishing where the soggy action is more forgiving on 2 and 3 kg mono. Anything 4 kg and over and it's back to graphite. Also got a couple of loaner rods for newbys that you know have poor technique and arejust going to high stick.
Funnily enough I have never really broken many rods. One procaster barrra rod and one glass bottom bashing rod years ago is all I can remember.
Got a tcurve that has all the epoxy worn away and blank is scored where a lures trebled have rubbed but still gets loaded right up and hasn't exploded yet.
Does anyone know where the love of god goes, when the waves turn the minutes to hours?
