Boat motor "service"

Picked up my boat last week after in being in for it's 100 service. After being unable to start it and investigation this is the condition I found the fuel filter and sparkplugs in. I would've thought that both the fuel filter and sparkplugs would be replaced.

Love to know who did it as I am looking at getting my new acquisition serviced for the first time.
Heading north with it in April & don't wanna leave anything to chance......
Work, or lack of in this case, could leave you in a predicament that you shouldn't be in.

Looks like you’re the poor dude who got “ serviced “ . I’d be asking questions , naming and shaming ( if appropriate ) Then learning how to do it yourself. Changing plugs and filters is easy , then again so is replacing impellers and gear case oil . The only time my donk goes to my mechanic is for carby cleaning and synchronisation , because I’d well and truly make a dogs breakfast of that one .
Its a shame to see stuff like this happen.
My wife understands why I clean my rods n reels in the shower....

Ripped off on that one! Easy stuff to change and the very minimun for a 100hr service. If they didn't do those two things then they didn't do anything but take your money.

I took the boat back this
I took the boat back this morning and all components were replaced without argument so I don't really want to name and shame as he did the right thing. Although something else popped up that was a matter of concern (and should have been picked up during the service), one of the thermostat housings has a small crack in it that needs replacing (this is why there was a bit of salt residue on the sparkplugs).
Although he does done the right thing I certainly won't be going back again and I suggest anyone getting their boat serviced have a quick squiz before leaving their workshop just to be on the safe side

This is the 4th time I've
This is the 4th time I've had a motor serviced there and in the past has always left the replaced parts in a box in the boat. I don't know what went wrong this time around but I was rather annoyed yesterday, given the weather conditions. But I'm certainly on the lookout for a new mechanic now

I would recommend Mick from Marine Masters 0438 903 945. He is mobile and came out to my house to service my 150 4 stroke Yamaha recently.
He took pictures of the step by step process and sent the pictures to me detailing the service. Also plugs in his laptop for a full diagnostic and leaves all replaced items behind for you to inspect.
Good price to.

I taught myself how to do a
I taught myself how to do a general service and do it myself. Did my 75hp honda 4 stroke last weekend. Parts cost $258. And took me no more than three hours i reckon. That included
Spark plugs
Oil and filter
Fuel filter (in the motor)
Gear case oil and bung o rings
Water pump impellor
I didnt change out the in line fuel filter as the fuel in the bowl is still clean of any foreign material.
Anything else goes to the mechanic.

Do your own, and good onya for dealing with it correctly. It happens a bit.( things getting missed) apparenty. I used an engraver on plugs , filters ect. I had to take new motor in for first service. Few years back to a dealer. Got charged for full service.apparently.pitty my little mark was on all plugs, and filters.i only ended up paying for oils. Done it myself from that day forward.

Every dealer i have used has never given back the parts when i have had my Yamaha serviced. I recently used Ross's mobile marine to service my engine and he listed everything on the invoice he replaced and left all parts he changed behind. Can definitely recommend him.
I have also recently used a mobile trailer guy to do my bearings and check brakes https://www.westcoasttrailerandcaravanservices.com.au/ and he left all parts behind as well.
Definitely my new go to people for servicing.

Good you found the thermostat housing problem. My cowl comes off after every couple of trips out to have a look around & check for salt water ingress or leaks. Clean & spray with inbox or equivalent. I don't think the plugs need changing every 100 hours depending on the motor, but obviously would if they looked like that. Inline fuel filters should go more than 100 hours too & minor surface rust wouldn't affect operation. I do mine myself and I find corrosion is the main problem I'm looking for especially around the thermostat.housing and lower leg. I like the fact that some guys leave parts replaced & I would stipulate it.

The surface rust on the fuel
The surface rust on the fuel filter didn't concern me as such, it was just proof that the filter hadn't been replaced as was stipulated on the parework. Personally I would rather have both the plugs and filter replaced every 100 hour service (especially the fuel filter, I wouldn't trust one to go 200 hours). As for the sparkplugs they're not super expensive ones and as it's a two stroke motor I'd rather have them replaced as well every 100 hours.
Maybe I'm being paranoid but I'd rather have those components replaced as the minor cost involved certainly beats having to be towed back in (especially as I volunteer at the Cockburn Sea Rescue)

He did try to tell me that it was done by one of his mechanics because the paperwork said it had been done. He soon back peddeled and couldn't grovel enough once I asked him to explain why there was still rust on the fuel filter.

I get my boat serviced religiously every year before our annual trip to Exmouth, and the bullshit quality of servicing nowadays is why I always take for a good run after the service and before we leave for up north. The last two years I’ve had mates get their boat back from a service with 1) no impeller put back in!!! And 2) without the bolts being tightened on the carby meaning fuel leaked everywhere when he launched and started the motor at coral bay. Nearly spoilt the trip until we figured it out. My current motor needs to be serviced by the dealer or authorised mechanic to get the extended warranty but as soon as it’s out of warranty then I’ll be doing it myself as it’s piss easy and at nearly$1000 a service to a mechanic is just robbery-over it!!!

So does anyone know where I can get some info on doing my own DF90 service? I watched a couple of youtube clips on changing the impellor, looks fairly straight forward apart from the retensioning of the leg bolts. That's the kind of info I'm after. Oil change etc, which filters to change out etc.

But honestly there is nothing to changing the impellor on one other than if the bolts holding the water pump in snap and need a helicoil.
I have (had?) a manual for my DF115's but looks like my hard drive is corrupted as I cant locate it to give you.
When removing the leg, put it in gear and tilt outboard at about 45 deg or more.

And a tip:
When reassembling the water pump, it makes it easier if you smear a bit of dishwashing detergent over the impeller, then as you are sliding the pump housing into place, rotate the drive shaft CLOCKWISE (looking down the shaft towards the g/box). Housing should slide into place with the impeller vanes laying the correct way.

And thats pretty mutch the same if its a 5HP or a 115HP, 2 stroke or 4 stroke any flavour Merc, Yam , Suz ect. I would only add smere some grease on the bolts before you put them back and buy a $20 oil pump to refill the leg ( well worth it). One other thing it doesnt take much effort to pull your anodes that are placed around the block, give them a clean with a wire brush or replace and check the corrosion on the inside of your block.

Some you wont get a torque
Some you wont get a torque wrench on anyway.
But if you do one with a torque wrench you can do them similar with a ringy.
Water pump bolts are the ones to be careful of, notorious for snapping.
Worse the longer you leave it.
If it happened just fit a helicoil and its better than original

Similar experience
Had a very similar experience very recently with a marine mechanic SOR. Difference being this guy was tasked with checking out a "check engine light" and when I got the boat back the electronics weren't working anymore! The wiring behind the dash was so f*&^ed by what he had done that I spent another $1000 to get it fixed by someone else. None of the guages worked after I got the boat back and his comment was "they will probably start working once you put the boat in the water". That was the moment when I went "oh sh!t I actually let this guy work on my boat"
Plus he did a service and charged me $840 for it. I did not even ask for it to be serviced.
