Black Bum Cod

Hi All

What is your opinion on the Black ass cod when it comes
to eating and the size that you can get a decent fillet off?

Is there much meat on a just size one?

I have been catching a few lately and have been releasing them as i didnt think that there would be much of a feed on them. All legal size too.

Am i right in thinking these fish dont grow very big?

Thanks

Not much meat on the just size ones, you can get some decent size ones though and they have quite a bit on them.

this is the biggest we have caught on our boat, and at this size you get a bit of meat of them.

black arse

Black arse are excellent fish to eat but cooking them whole is the way to go, put what ever spices you like  then wrap in foil and cook, friend cooks them and calls it his chilli fish stew thats nice to, I like them filleted and grilled on bbq.  Foot in mouth

Black Bums

We don't tend to fillet them, rather just gut them and cook them whole, unless we are freezing them. But rarely freeze them anyway. I suppose it depends on what you call BIG - but they've never been what I would call BIG when compared to pinkoes, reds, morwong, dhuis etc.

I rate them pretty well as table fish.

All the above IMO only :)

EDIT - PS - I'd consider the one that Dean just posted a very respectable size.

always a bit unsure

Always a bit unsure when it comes to filleting cod as they have big heads and little bodies. I will give one a go next time. I can say i have never filleted a herring. Laughing

BB!

Thu, 2008-08-07 19:17

I only normally keep the bigger ones Rodrat so you can get a good enough fillet off but yeh whole on the BBQ is good also. I do like the BB but I try not to over cook it. I still prefer other fish over it however like KG & pinks etc!

Always used to fry or crumb

Thu, 2008-08-07 20:29

Always used to fry or crumb my fish, picked up a steamer ages ago from the markets and have never looked back . You can grow fresh herbs or buy them , the thing is not to use to much of them as they over power the fish  . I use coriander , lemongrass , italian parsley ect there's so many different things you can use . Black ass is great for steaming as well as Baldchin ,Ruby Snapper , Dhufish and Foxfish just lay the fillets in the top of the steamer lightly spread on the coriander and throw the lemongrass in the steamer water dont put it on the fish and five minutes later throw it on a salad and your mr's will adore you . Ryan ill do it for you just have to catch some first Wink, actually pulled a bit out of the freezer the other day which i had left the white fat on and steamed it ,lovely
