What a load of rubbish, "just

Thu, 2012-10-18 21:13

What a load of rubbish, "just fishing for gummies to catch the family a feed" must of been fishing for some pretty bloody serious gummies in that case! paddling out baits on the 90 mile is the latest craze where you have the same chance of catching a GW as catching a whaler. problem is only a select few people used to know about it and kept fairly quiet, now every man and his dog is having a crack at it. The sport will be banned sooner or later as GW's on the beach are not a good look for other water users and these small townships will soon kick up a stink.

I used to do it a fair bit when I was young and boatless, but realised its not much of a challenge when the shark is is trying to pull 200 metres of 50lb mono through the water, the stretch in the line alone is enough to have most sharks buggered. Then it’s just a matter of towing them in.

But back to the topic, that looks like an 8 footer and would have a nice set of chompers! I've got a similar size jaw at home I would like to have it set inside a coffee table with a glass top.

Ben85,It's hardly anything

Ben85,

It's hardly anything new as people have been doing it for at least 50 years as far as I know.Myself and my mate used to take baits out with a RC boat on the 90 Mile here in Vic and we started (with the boat) well over 20 years ago.We caught 2 White Pointers on consecutive Saturdays one season and they were around the same size as the one in the story. We used to get very good sharks in close ie about 30-50 yards out but we found that numbers dropped a bit in closer hence the boat.

Definitely NOT a "select few" that have been doing it.

Ok fair point maybe a select

Ok fair point maybe a select few was a bit of an overstatement, havnt lived there for 5 years but it seems every man and his dog is having a crack at it recently. Maybe it's the development of social media over the last couple of years that's giving it more attention?

I bet it's wasn't in the news 20 years ago??

Regardless! There are a lot more doing it than 20 years ago, that's for sure!

As for our best method: usually just behind the second sandbar was the best for us. Only problem with the 90 mile was sometime the sandbar was very shallow, even 50-100 meters out and the mono would rub against the bar snapping us off on a few occasions. Most whites were between 6-9ft, got chewed through 500lb trace a few times on larger models. But bronzies were always more fun to catch, the whites had power but a bit sluggish.

I now here there may be a land based shark fishing competition on the 90 mile in the bear future, your thoughts??

G'day Ben,I really don't like

G'day Ben,

I really don't like the idea of a shark competition on the 90 Mile as it would get too much negative publicity and some would be saying that sharks are being brought in by baits.Too many uninformed people would be wanting the whole thing banned. There are definitely a lot more people after sharks as you say.

The sandbars can be a problem that's for sure.My mate and I used to fish Golden & Paradise beaches and they were a lot deeper than my area ie McGaurans,Woodside,Reeves beaches.

Taking a bait out a long way is a great way to get a feed for sure, but not entirely "sporting", just good fun as you know.Ya never know what's going to come along. Some scarey critters around!

Looking forward to getting some fresh Flake...bloody cold Victorian waters!

Darren, thats right-

Darren, thats right- sometimes there's nothing better than taking a few baits out, and sitting on the beach all day with a esky full of ice&beer having a laugh. Once the baits are out and sitting nice, the pressure is off for the day.

In my opinion a 5-7ft bronzy is about the best flake around!

I'm actually gping to back in Aus for a week from the 27th and looking to take the old mans boat out off welshpool for some early season snapper while i'm back. Are they getting any snapper/gummies yet? As you said above, the water is probably still a bit cold for the snapper in corner inlet?

cheers/Ben

G'day Ben,

Yep it's a fairly relaxed set-and-leave type of fishing, at least until a shark comes along! You're not wrong IMO about the smaller bronzies being the best Flake..sweeet!

The water's still a bit cold (bloody Vic) but you'll be able to get the odd gummy and some good flathead outside a little bit.Should be any time now when the snapper come in properly, they've been doing okay in Port Phillip on them with the main influx yet to come.If only we could get some stable, warm weather!..pouring down at the moment.
