Advice on what fluid to run in a wet box.
Submitted by Blank Cheque on Fri, 2009-04-24 11:26
I have been talking with a couple of guys around home of late on what fluid is best to run in a wetbox. There have been several suggestions. Has anyone experimented or any advice please ?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for asking some may know it as something else.
Its a box/Tube that is moulded to the inside of the hull. The tranducer is then mounted to the box/Tube lid. It is then filled with fluid and sends the signal through the hull. This method was built into the boat when I brought it new back in 2001 and is still being used today in there latest models.

wet box
straight water is fine, just add a drop of coolant as this stops the grime from building up.

when I enquired
they said you can basically fill it with anything. Some suggestions I got was olive oil, peanut oil, distilled water, glycerine, transmission oil and so on.
If it was me, I'd probably go glycerine. But thats just me

Some may recall my post earlier asking if anyone else has had trouble with Lowrance transducers.
Well the story is that I am now on my 3rd transducer, the last one only lasting 12 months and the unit has done very little work even though it is about 7 y/o.
After speaking with Navco they advised me that they have changed the resign in the latest transducers.
I have run cooking oil in mine since day one. Last time I replaced the transducer I noticed that a gum like substance had built up around the joins in the resign, hence my enquiry into this subject.
I think its best I go away from the oil and now have a few other options to try.
Thanks again
Garry

Cooking oil isn't a
Cooking oil isn't a non-drying oil and that would be the problem with it going gummy I guess.
