Albany

Good timing with the post Wade,

I live down here in Albany and have only just bought a boat (Traily Freestyle 485 - I had to join the club)... I have only been out in it once and with a new sounder going in it next week i will be out there and searching around for some good ground to drop a line.

re: launching - The town jetty is closed at the moment due to lots of renovations. Emu Pt is the most popular place to launch - lots of parking and a few ramps to choose from.  There are also the yacht club in Little Grove and a few other beach ramps (Frenchmans Bay and Two Peoples Bay).

re: fishy ground - theres quite a few different spots to go. lots of whiting, herring and skippy close in and you can go out to the islands, or further out to the shelf, if you are looking for something heavier. with lots of bays and a few islands around it is usually possible to find somewhere sheltered, even when it does blow up a bit. But even in summer you can have a cold and wet ride back in.

Hopefully a few of the other local guys will post something up. From some of the previous posts on this site I do know there are fish out there, and i will hopefully be pulling a few up over the next couple of months... well I better anyway.

If anyone is going to PM some secret spots to Wade - feel free to send em to me too.....

Cheers,

Scott

Yes been doing some research..emu point looks like a pretty good place to launch. Last year in Jan, the weather was better down south than Perth!

Albany Weather...

Mon, 2009-11-30 17:02

nah lets just say its going to be very cold and very windy down here over summer - we have to keep the crowds away!!!

but you are right - previous years we have had a lucky run with the weather. 2 yrs ago we even had a few >40 degs C days ove rthe Chrissy period... that's gotta be comparable to a 60 degree day in Perth.

Theres a ramp out near whale

Mon, 2009-11-30 18:10

Theres a ramp out near whale world that we usually launch from if heading out that way towards the islands or round to the south of the head, it's a longer drive than to emu point but saves a lot of time in the boat, also usually no one else there :) You're protected from the southerly winds there too so you don't have a long drive in threw the chop!

Just head out frechmans bay road all the way out to whale world and turn right onto salmon holes road then left down murray road and follow it to the end. Just have to be careful if it's a real low tide as you may not be able to launch, it's a fairly shallow little bay but we've had good luck launching from there everytime we've been :)

Do you guys have chart cards in your gps cos that'll help you to find some good ground, lots of good rises and lumps out there.

My personal favourite place to launch from is out at Torbay. Hartmans beach is the spot to put the boat in but it's not the easiest place ever to get the boat in and out :) The track down onto the beach is a steep gravel track that wasn't in the best condition last time we were there (bout 2 months ago) but I think they were about to fix it up (judging by the piles of fresh gravel at the top of the track. Definately need a 4wd to get out of there but the beach is nice and hard and usually there's not much wave movement to cause problems getting the boat in. Out from Torbay the water drops off to 30m+ within a couple of minutes of heading out and you're protected from the Westerly winds along the side out near West Cape Howe where it's around 40m. If the weather isn't great we usually stay in close to the rocks, reallly close and just drift back out. Some good reefy ground along there and always get a few queen snapper, harleqiun and break sea. If the weather IS good it's worth heading out towards eclipse island, some awesome ground around there. Passage reef is a spot I really want to explore. 65m up to 5m within a very short drift, got to be fish hanging there!

Anyway.. I could go on.. depends what you want to fish for really!? Great king george fishing... squiding.. etc all around albany!

Good luck!

Cheers mate, going to have to print that lot out. Not fussed were to fish, but i know it will depend on how kind the weather gods are going to be. Will stay in close for kgs, but if low swell/wind i would like to get out a little bit. What would you call small and too big of a swell to head out in down there..if the wind was to blow up?? we are staying in Little Grove.

The great thing about Albany

Mon, 2009-11-30 20:49

The great thing about Albany area is that there's usually somewhere you can tuck away from the wind and swell, have a look on google earth at the area and you can figure out where is going to be good with the weather conditions at hand.

The problemmm with Albany is that they never get the forecast right.. haha. Summer obviously will see smaller swells but can still get windy. Anything below 2m swell should be fishable (how big is your boat?). Despite what people say, Albany can get awesome weather... occasionally! :) Hope it turns on while you're down there!

If you're staying in Little Grove then the boat ramp at the Yatch Club is your best bet, or the one I said out at Frechmans Bay near Whale World if you want to head out further. I can PM you anymore details if you want.

Mon, 2009-11-30 18:23

Hi scottbec, i am going to be down in Bremer in the first week of Jan too. Maybe we could catchup and go for a fish.

You are fishing down there right? :)

I will be there from 5th Jan till about the 12th of Jan. Will either be staying with some friends at the river mouth caravan park ar at a mates shack near native dog beach.

Plan is to be shorebased(cant be arsed towing the boat down there) and the goal is a big Blue Groper on rod and reel off the rocks. Mega challenge!!!! Hahaha
