4-5m Shark Swan River
Submitted by Swan River Fisher on Tue, 2011-11-08 07:59
Just reading the paper and someone spotted a 4-5m shark of some sort near Mt Henry Bridge in the Swan River. Swimmers are told to not swim, and avoid water at dawn and dusk, particularly in areas where wastes are excreted into the river.
Sheiiiiit lucky we got a bigger boat
Lol
Any you guys read it?

Nah we swam along the sandbar, and only around the jetty for a few minutes. That was another group of snorkelers who were talking to the fisherman on the jetty. My mate just overheard them talking when he was waiting for me to come out of the water.

Fair enough, was just down there to have a squid and play around with the torches, water was pretty crap worse then a week ago when i went for a snorkel, seems like bright torches going to be the undoing of the swan river.

LOL one rouge shark killing
LOL one rouge shark killing everyone? Seriously? He must also be a die hard movie critic. What a dick. Whites are whites, they wanna eat they will, we move in the ocean, to them we are a big fish or seal....yum yum yum. I can just imagine a movie out of this with that famous guy who does voice overs for previews, "Perth, once a quiet city. Once a place you could swim without worry. But now......there is something else living in the waters" DO DO DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!
4-5M Shark in the swan, possible. But i think people lately are seeing thing, ive looked off the beach before thinking "is that a fin?" Was just a splash of water....
I love fishing. It`s escaping reality for a few hours for me!

Personally
I dont beleive a word these research people say..Lets say they have tagged 50 GWS off off coast and i read somewhere the other day that only 1 has been picked up in perth waters this year..Hmm with all the sightings and events lately that tells me there is a shit load around beacause all these ones arent part of the 50 tagged. People who are on the water are the best source of feed back... And they say there are more out there. If there is an attack kill it i say if you are lucky enough to get it its only one shark hardly gonna upset natures balance...Makes me laugh all these bleeding hearts dont kill the shark!! What about dhufish, snapper, etc, its there ocean too give me a break... Most these people saying it dont even dip their toes in the ocean..

For those that think you can
For those that think you can kill of all the sharks. I ask you this. Are you happy to give up fishing also? All be it just for squid?
Kill to many sharks and that will be the biggest step in the ecosystem. Squid will start to run wild then the squid in turn will start to eat all the juvenile fish hence starting the collapse of a total fishing area. This is fact . It may take ten or even twenty years but that's what you'll be left with. Oh until the squid also run out food then you'll have little to nothing. But at least you'll be able to swim with out the fear of sharks.
For those that say this crap well i ask you what would happen if we got ride of the police. No control over the law anymore? Well thats the best example i can put forward.

Hey Rod dont think anyone on
Hey Rod dont think anyone on here would want to see all the sharks killed mate, just the ones that eat us.So that would mean that we have had 10 or so shark fatalities in the last 10 years or so.That would mean we kill 10 sharks, cant see that making a huge diff over the long run.

i go kayaking in the river,
i go kayaking in the river, and ive seen quite a few dolphins at times, but never any sharks. i used to go night diving years ago fro prawns, and saw some flathead, flounders, crabs, but never any sharks. ive gone crabbing in recent years, and see the odd cobbler (which are now protected) but have never seen any sharks. I've seen sharks in the ocean, and once we had to kill a grey nurse shark years ago (we were diving for abalone in a cave down south and it was getting agressive, do they like abalone ?)

Could have been territorial.
Could have been territorial. Maybe it had young in there? Or maybe it was just its cave. Either way you were disturing its home.

Are you aware that Grey Nurse Sharks are protected? (unless it was before 1984 that you're speaking about) Also it's illegal to take abalone on scuba, unless it's a commercial operation. Have heard that the pro abalone divers down south get buzzed by whites often, most if not all now dive in scooter cages. Not sure if it's the abalone that the shark is interested in, more the area's they are diving in I would think.

hi matt,
When i diving i meant snorkelling along way from shore, but we were going down about 3-5m deep into a cave under a reef as i was a lot fitter in those days. (not like swimming on the surface getting 'easy to find' abalone). I know the shark was about 6-8ft long, and grey in colour, but to be frank, not exactly sure what breed of shark. I do know that it was acting quite agressively are it was circling us, and since we were a way off shore, we didnt want to swim for shore with it 'buzzing us'.
i've seen sharks in the water a lot over the years, but normally that are not agressive at all. This happened in the late 1980's, I just checked now, and in nsw they were protected from 1984 onwards, and nationally from 1997 onwards so definately legal in those days here in WA

its funny how people get very
its funny how people get very paranoid about sharks, when you look at the numbers of times that divers/snorkellers have come across sharks, the number of attacks is very , very small. I've come across quite a few sharks in past, but only once did it get so that i felt in danger. Unless a shark is attacking people we should go after them and 'kill them all' , as rodp says, they have an important place in the ecosystem.
It would be interesting to know if there are large sharks in the swan river, they havent proven themselves to be dangerous if they are in the river. (with the last attack in rhe river over 40 years ago)
