3 Mile Snapper
Still hadn't added a size snapper to my tally after having a dedicated a dawn and a sundown crack at them. The weather was looking mint so I hatched a plan to get the Mrs to pickup the kids from after school care and daycare and visited MickC and grabbed a berley log and headed out at 3pm.
Drove out the same ground where Hutch and I went 2 weeks ago and caught some undersized dhu's and snapper in around 16m and did a few drift bait runs for nought and managed a nice 48cm flattie on my microjig on the other rod.
It got to around 4:50 and I spent the next 20 mins piss farting around trying to find a lump with sand on the other side (will just use the reefy next time) and settled on a spot and dropped anchor only to be 50m from the lump I wanted to be near but I was still over some (very) flat coral and very much doubting myself. I thought long and hard about moving and decided it was just too late.
Started the berley going and chucked out my drift bait squid rig and a floating mulie on my Catalina all rounder with 5000 Biomaster. It got to sunset and still nothing happening so I started cubing up mulies a bit quicker and shaking the berley bag more ofter and slowly I could see bait on the screen, and then more bait and something bigger and bang, I'm on a run. The Catalina/Biomaster combo is amazing and after a decent but short fight I saw colour and realised it was a bloody nice pinky. 76cm of nice.
While I was putting it on ice my heavier rod went nuts and I was in a serious fight on PE 3-4 and 50lb line gaining as much line as I got thinking I had hooked a monster 3 Mile Dhu and after a good 10 mins I pulled in a bloody ray. Cut the line above the hooks, pulled anchor and drove back in with a bloody big smile on my face and now sitting back with a Cooper's Red.
Officially off the Pies bandwagon

I don't know if it is different down there...
...but early/late/after dark the big pinks are over the lighter, broken flat bottom anyway, feeding. Being actually over a lump can be counterproductive for big fish after dark, although it may be different down your way.
