Squidding in the Sound

Hey Guys,

My mates and I were looking at having a go squidding in the Cockburn Sound this Saturday (weather permitting) but we have never been out there so were wondering if anyone had any advice? We will launch from Woodmans point and then hopefully have some luck fairly close to shore. From what I've seen on seabreeze winds are meant to be 10 - 15 knots in the morning and swell 3 meters. Does that sound ok for the sound?

We only have a small boat so don't want to venture off shore too far but hoping you guys could suggest some good spots. Also are there any reefs or anything we need to look out for so we don't hit them?

And is it worth taking the rods out and trying to catch anything (of course not Snapper) or is there nothing really there until you go out deeper?

Thanks

Head to Pamerlia bank, close spot to travel to from Woodmans Point boat ramp marina with a smaller boat. The offshore swell doesnt influence the Sound that much and that wind strength is fine as we prefer to have a slightly faster drift and cover ground. If your going a bit quick just use a sea anchor.

Ryan was squiding there a few days ago and he got a feed. The Yo-Zuri in brighter colours ie pink & pink/orange mix was working well. Drift over the broken sand/weed patches and have a good selection of squid jigs to use until you get results. Having different sizes/weights and a selection of colours is the key to squiding success.

Woodmans Point itself is shallow and rocky but visual, just head due West after leaving the Woodmans Point boat ramp marina and once your paralel to the shallow broken sand/weed patches just drift, depth is 3-5m (approximately)

squidding

squidding isn’t as hard as everybody makes it out to be the trick is in the quality jigs and the area/depth

I have found that the yo-zuri and the yamashita are the best I have had most luck with the natural colours but you have to be able to change it up in case the squid aren’t going for that colour it is a good idea to pick up some egi leader as squid have amazing eye site the technique is pretty simple it is just a matter of casting over the weed beds letting it sink until it is almost on the bottom then either a slow gentle lift or a fast jig and let it sink again it is a good idea to change it up every cast

Spots I have had the most luck over the weed/mussels beds in front garden island but anywhere with weed beds and some sandy patches in it will work best depth i have found is 3-5m and I would take the rods and just rig them with a simple paternoster and some long shank hooks as there are some nice king George out there at the moment

hope this helped hope you get some

Awesome! Thanks for the advice guys, will give it a shot and see how it goes. I bought a pack of 10 squid jigs the other day and they are all different sizes and colours so will just keep trying swapping them until I find a winner. And a couple of king george would be a bonus so I'll give that a go too. Would they be around the squid areas?

Yes the KG's are in the same area but more on the sand with weed patches.

second that weather as forecast will be fine. You'll only get swell rolling through between carnac and garden island.

your savage in the pic a 4.55 safari? You'll go fine in the sound in most weather.

Yeah that's correct, we are going to be going out in my boat which is a 4.55 Savage Safari. Never been anywhere in it other than the river so good to know it'll be ok in the sound.

Because the squid in Cockburn can often be quite finicky or not hungry, you have to use quality jigs. Yo Zuri or harimitsu the best. It makes a massive difference and it's worth the extra money
