Someone please tell me - southern rock lobster question

Crayfishing is new to me and apart from the father in laws pots, i have

never dropped a pot in the water. I am looking at moving to esperance.

Do southern rock lobster go into pots ?

That is the most important question before the move can happen !

And don't set the pots on sand like you do for western rock lobsters during the whites.

And southerns aren't as common as westerns by a long shot....in fact not many rec fishers down here bother setting pots for them. Southern ocean doesn't always co-operate either.... Most guys that chase crays do it on scuba.

Yep they do, have caught a few myself. Shallow water too, under 10m and big thumping things too, was in wooden pots so no side release, was a lot of fun getting 3 or 4 BIG crays out of one pot!

Fighter crays

They don't call them fighter crays for nothing when you see what damage they can do with the sharp points on their feet.

Seen a diver who bear hugged a jumbo while swimming it back to the boat, its claws went straight through his wetsuit and ripped him to shreds, it might be something you do with a western jumbo cray but definitely not a southern, big mistake.

In south oz down in the SE

Thu, 2013-06-13 09:12

In south oz down in the SE corner on the flattest days in summer, 40 degree temp we`d grab an esky full of beers and go drop netting for them in the dingi. It would be nothing to catch 20-30 ( keep the best 8 ) often a good sample, the Bulls loved crawling through the day when she`s flat in only a few metres of water. The Pro`s that fish the inside ground would double lift their pots on those days, often getting as many in the second pull after about 6 hours wet as they would for the night set....
The further west you come the more they taper off. Anywhere from Lincoln west it can be a pretty fickle fishery...
Quota`s were brought in too late in the Northern zone ( murray mouth west )in SA, the damage had already been done... As for the Eucla-Esperance area I know even the experienced pros scratch there head as to the fickle nature of the crays down there... You can set the same ground for a week, swell/no swell - moon/no moon etc etc and then they'll crawl the day your about to load the gear on for fresh ground thinking they not there....Anyway off track, Woody will help you I`m sure...
