Soft plastic and lure ideas

 Hi guys,

Can you give me some ideas as to what set up to use for targeting flat head in the swan river? Any tips / hints would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

My lure type of choice is

My lure type of choice is metal vibes. Others like soft plastics, I like the vibes as the blowies can't ruin them and they are fairly easy to work and cast because of the weight (metal).

Use a light graphite rod in the 2 - 4kg class ~7' long. 2000 size reel 6 - 10 lb braid.

You want flats that have both weed and sand. With a drop off with some deeper water. They will more often than not be hanging around where the sand meets the weed or near the drop off to deeper water.

Do yourself a favour, buy some polarised glasses and wear a hat. You will see into the water much better than you would without them, which gives you a huge advantage.

I should also add, use a good quality leader. I usually go 8 - 10lb flurocarbon leader ~1m long. Join it with a line to line knot rather than a swivel. I just use a double uni, never had a problem. Using a swivel I think changes the balance of delicate lures.

Do your feet a favour and wear and old pair of shoes or some reef walkers, never know what your going to step on.. glass, sharp rocks... cobbler!

I have sent you a PM regarding some places to fish.

 My setup goes:3lb braid

Mon, 2012-12-17 13:50

 My setup goes:

3lb braid (great casting distance) to a 6lb QUALITY fluro leader (I use nitlon, has great abrassion resistance and providing you play the fish out slowly

and change your leader when it starts to get scuffed from a few fish you will very rarely lose a lure). about 1.5m of that to a hard body lure around 4cm long. Now I'm currently really liking the atomic hardz range, but all you really have to do is find a lure that will get down to the bottom, so generally a mid to deep diving minnow is what I go with. I generally fish water between 0.5-1.5m, and dont discard the shallow water!!!!

Just get out there and you'll learn pretty quikly

Go for the z man grubs in

Go for the z man grubs in green or atomic shallow diver in purple

Spot the traffic bridge freo on low tide fish the rise

Been there five times in last fortnight twice on kayak had a ball so far this season have landed at least 30 and have lost as much  the z man Grubbs are the only plastic I use around the salty end of the river as the blowies are in plagues and soon costs dosh  to target anything  they are bullet proof check out the you tube video only in America

As for kayak trolling the gutters just beyond best cast  from shore  with rapala ultra lights and the good old atomics  is by far the easiest way I ever have caught lizards  best 75 cm

Noxious is smack on with the vibes  real good long casting make vibes and you are in touch with every bight who would think fish eat shiny metal  can't keep me in me tackle box work for just about anything that swims  fresh salt and the brack

the soft plastics such as

the soft plastics such as zman grubz in 2.5inch are great but i find the blowies get to them before bream or flatties on some days so i fish the hardbodies pretty much all the time, atomic hardz and cranka lures aswell and ecogear. anything between about 40mm and 60mm will do the trick. just slow it right down and if the fish arent playing add a bit of a twitch and you'll soon be into some fish. like spinnak said dont discard shallow water, flatties love the sand right near weed beds and drop offs and its great fun having a wade and flick at them, jst remember mobiles and wallets dont like getting wet!

vibes and blades are also great and im sure with a few sessions you'll learn what the score is and be posting some big pics up for us to be jealous of!
