Salmon Fishing 2013
Submitted by Jac54 on Sat, 2013-03-02 00:22
How is the Salmon Fishing season shaping up around Dunsborough way this year? The last 2 years have been very poor due to the Ocean currents being so warm.
Does anyone have any future predictions for the Ocean current temperature around April this year or is it going to be another fizzer?

No schools yet
From what I've heard.
I wouldn't exactly say 2012 was poor, I would of personally landed over 50 easily and these were all caught north of Augusta last season.

Yeah, but
anywhere east of Walpole is cheating
I'd say that a few will make there way up the west coast like last year but no 'run' as per usual.

Been hearing plenty of talk
Been hearing plenty of talk around that it prob will not happen and that they will go out wide due to the water temp being way too high. Plenty of Mackies around the cape so that would indicate the water is around 23C. I hope it does end up hapening though but I wouldn't be surprised if it doesn't.

Mack's currently being
Mack's currently being caught near peaceful bay, dolphin fish out from cheynes, baldies and long tail tuna from Walpole and that just the last 2 weeks so I don't think many salmon will make it even as far as Albany this year. Will still be a run but same as last year very few around the capes.
always looking for a new challenge!!

Unsure
Have had word from a few of the ol boys who have fished here there whole lives an they seem to think it will be better than the last two years ( which around Dunsborough were pretty poor , last year we had salmon here for only 4-5 days in good numbers and year before very little salmon action ) , the water has cooled slightly in the last week , so it is a matter of wait and see! Dolphinfish , Maccys have still been speared in the past week though !, went for a fish from shore casting small stickbaits and poppers two nights ago , Dave and i caught Longtom's (as well as whiting and Herring ) , Dave got a Giant Herring last night.
A few reports of a couple of schools around Windy Harbour starting to come in and customers went down to Yeagarup looking for salmon yesterday , no report as of yet.

Warpole produced
Just had a ripper morning session down at Warpole this long weekend with 6 nice specimens
landed and 4 lost, but Warpole seems to always produce so doubt it relates to north of Augusta,
definately keen to have school in front of me again let's just hope predictions are wrong and
we have an amazing season
good luck to all

Water temps
All depends on water temperature on whether they move up the west coast.
Better to use mulies, live herring or lures rather than trumpeters for salmon. Never caught one on trumps and never seen a trump come out of one when cleaning them or cutting them up for craybait professionally.

Cape Naturaliste
Wouldn't have been salmon because last year they got as far north as Cape Naturaliste and some of the beaches in Geographe bay and it only lasted about a week period.
More likely it was a school of big buffs as the big ones rarely bite on anything other than weed

Salmon are on the way
Went to Yeagarup on the weekend and caught one salmon and saw a school of about 40 ton surfing the waves heading west towards black point. A fisher on the beach told me that they were catching them during the week also. Water temp was 20.3c

Thanks for the report. Do you
Thanks for the report. Do you think the water Temp will be cooling down around Dunsborough way by Easter? Would love to get into a few this year after a couple of dismal years. When they do come there should be heaps considering they haven't been netting them commercially for quite a while as well.

Not too bad
There wasn't much of a beach at high tide along several short parts of the beach restricting access , drove up to the shacks with no dramas. There was plenty of good gutters to fish into.
