Quobba lure selection
I'm off to Quobba for the first time in about a week's time and i have accumulated a range of lures for the trip.
Now do you guys have a particular order or any advice as to what lure gets tied on first and/or for particular conditions?
Do i just start from the top and fish the surface first thing in the morning and then work my way down the water column?
Or do i just blindly pick a lure out of the box and try my luck?
Basically i have a range of lures and variety is the spice of life, but where do i start???
I'll be bringing 65-85gram metals, ritcher plugs, various poppers, xrap sxr14s, xrap subwalks, adagio heavys, bluescodes and a few packets of zman 8' streakz.
What species can I encounter this time of year? I guess that'll also affect lure selection.

Pack some big white lead
Pack some big white lead head jigs. Great for casting and if the shark mackerels come around, then they work well on them.
cheers

hope you have a great time
hope you have a great time up there mate.
i love using ritcher plugs in different sizes. for me they have caught so many different species and can also cast a mile.
i would also pack some long casting poppers so you can get into some surface action.

Lures OK
Lure selection looks OK. Would not worry about White lead head jigs as Shark mackerel do not show up until nov/dec. Also you can't get them in Perth. We go in November and just got 100 (between 4 angler) from the USA to cover the next trip.
This time of year hit and miss with lures. Just try different ones and persistance is the key. Might also be worth taking some soft plastics depending on where you fish. Chance of getting spanglies and baldies around lower ledges. I know of a baldie being caught at Camp Rock but on bait.

Thanks Iceman. I have a few packets of plastics and various jigheads. We'll have plenty of bait up there too, the old boys will be armed with salted mullies.
I was hoping to lure fish whilst the bait is having a soak and during the quiet times waiting for a run.
But it if it's anything like my recent trip out Steep way, there wont be much waiting!

usually i crack out the stickbaits or xraps to start of with, then move onto 85g raiders later in the day. Most of my good fish hav been on metals, but xraps are awesome to see whats around as everything smashes them.

it all depends,. If metals
it all depends,. If metals brained it the day before, i'll whack on a metal. also dependant on what spots you fish. usually fish metals on higher ledges (garths, etc) and xrap 14s and shallow divers etc on lower ledges, like 2 Mile and Camp Rock etc.) Extra-deep divers and mackbaits for when i've got balloons out fishing south wall, north wall etc. as said above, 2 and 3oz maribou jigs work a treat especially on sharkies, but their run hasn't really started yet.

I assume that because you
I assume that because you haven't mentioned trolling the lures, you are land based? If you are the metals will be 'easier' to use cos you'll be able to cast them out further than the likes of xraps, or at least I haven't had much success casting xraps off the cliffs very far haha good luck mate!!

depends what gear you are
depends what gear you are using. With the right combo, I can cast xraps further than metals. the SXR14s are 43g, so they do have some weight behind them.

sometimes - usually stop
sometimes - usually stop winding 2 or 3 metres out so they can float back up and avoid the ledge

Sounds good leemo, what sort of set up are you using to be able to cast them out that far?
