Lending out your boat?

Just wondering how many of you would lend out your boat for a day to a mate if they asked?  Even if they'd never been out in your boat before (but an experienced boaty all the same) and they didn't know those ins and outs of your boat and you had limited time to tell them.  (few other little pieces of info here, but just wondering on general thoughts)

If they're a regular decky and know what they're doing then possibly, but if the haven't been on the boat before then no.

Would the boat still be covered by insurance?

When something breaks or can go wrong its aways when someone else uses it.

Nup, my boat no one else can borrow it.

Pretty certain the boat is covered regardless of who is skippering.

Yeah I would lend my boat to the select few who I trust, but I swore I'd never again, after they used it and didn't clean it properly a while back. My boat is a bit of a hack though.

need to chk your policy.  i spoke to my insurer about this last week because my 17 yr old son wanted to "borrow the boat dad... to take a girl to rotto?"....  he has a RST so no problem there, and as a once off or occassional thing, insurance not concerned, but if another is using it regularly then they need to know (sgio).

btw...  young teenager + boat (1st time) + young babe as a distraction and for show off potential + rotto = "son, i'll come along as a not in charge observer, you do everything, i'll drop you guys on the island and go fishing.  same applys on way home, just this first time...."  he must have found another option...

I would steer clear and take the other option of going out with them...don't want my spots copied in the GPS...but mainly for piece of mind...I would be a bit anxious until it got back...usual thing...most people take all care but have a accidental mishap and something will break or get damaged...each to their own tho

To many headaches. only person i would lend it to is the father out law. He has his own boat and looks after it better than i do mine. Consider this. You lend your boat out. For some reason, as it happens with boats, something really expensive or something that is really expensive to fix has the dick. There was no forewarning of it, it just happened, wear and tear, call it what you want.

but say the problem costs thousands to repair, as they usually do, are you gonna hit your mate up for it or are you gonna suck it up ?

Could cause to much anguish between mates in some cases i reckon.

Sun, 2012-08-26 09:31

Dont own a boat. No REAL experience in a boat but if i did have experience i wouldnt even consider asking to lend 1.  I would hate to have something go wrong whilst i borrowed it.  Like wen i borrowed a mates car parked it at a shop and some wanker backed in to me.  Of course he hit me up for the $$ as he only had limited insurance and there was no contact details ( i was happy to pay) .

Not the same as a car

Sun, 2012-08-26 11:19

You lend a car as you expect the person to be able to drive. Accidents do happen but generally something out of the ordinary. Boats however most damage occurs getting on or off the trailer or coming onto a jetty. That is only experience that prevents that. Lending your boat to someone not familiar with your particular boat is increasing the odds of a mishap Adam, you must remember the winning pic from the first exmouth comp. Some poor chump with the boat on the concrete at bundegi. He borrowed that boat too. After getting it back onto the trailer for him and launching he promptly drove it out and over the reef I would have to have a lot of confidence in the person to lend them a boat

and I even have spare rods and reels for those that dont. And all my deckies know how scrubbing brushes and rags work...:) On the other hand I am occaisonally asked to take clients of a mates out for demo drives. That responsibility has been given after lots of observation and hassle free trailering and boat time.

Be wary of people lending their boat hoping you'll f@$k it then force you to buy it. Happened before.

The dinghy was a bit of a get around though until I bought a new outboard. Not enough sctratches on it yet.

And anyone who is gonna use my gear without me around is going to have proven themselves to me with the operation and care of it.

Ok

Ok, looks like my thoughts are relatively justified.  Lets add in variables:

The boat is not currently insured.  The person's own boat had an engine issue which was being fixed.  Money is not an issue.  You have a week off to use the boat and plan to use it extensively and the person wants to use it the Sat/Sun before when you have Monday to Sunday off.  I have complete confidence in the person's boat handling ability, just not enough time to explain the ins/outs and especially my trailer having a mind of its own at times.

PS. I don't want your boat Bruce, haven't seen any photos of you catching anything in it so guess your marks can't be that good...

Thats a tough one....  the problems is when you find the odd thing broken or something later and dont want to be the one to pull your mate up on it.

That said, certian mates and my old man, probably have no issue.

I would have to know the person well and have a lot of faith in their ability to handle a boat.

Have done it before when needing a small inshore boat while I was driving a rescue boat on a search and Jeffo have driven all the boats I've owned, but then he's got miles more sea time logged than I have.

No for a couple of reasons

Mon, 2012-08-27 16:08

One. I wouldn't ask because I would be paranoid about the person saying no and, if they said yes and something went wrong I would feel really bad.

Two. If I lent the boat and it came back with damage or poorly presented it would cause me concern and I would probably lose a mate.

The guy over the road is a classic. He comes over and asks if he can borrow the lawn mover. That's not so bad but I always have a spare empty fuel can that needs filling before he can use it and it must be washed down before it comes back because I don't want his weeds on my lawn. Take it or leave it I say.

Lending anything is something we probably all do because we have a soft spot and find it hard to say no. It's the return that causes the problems and so it's sometimes best to say no. Surely good people can't be offended by that????

Best not to lend out your boat as it could lead to losing frendship with a mate.

I would lend it to my sons, but thats it.

And I would never ask a mate to lend his boat, just would not feel right.

No Insurance??

I dont get it Adam, you state that money isn't a problem yet your Boat isn't insured, not sure why you would let that lapse...as for lending it out I reckon its an issue purely because if something did go wrong the full consequences are on either the person who borrowed the boat or in the end you. Atleast if the thing was insured and something non life threatning happened than an agreement to have the excess paid should atleast partley make any issue less painful to either party.

Like others have said alls well that ends well, but if something comes a cropper could very well end a friendship...

Old fart would never lend his boat, as somebody said, you don't lend your wife, car, ball point pen or boat, as they never come back the way they went outl.  Not even to his older brothers that all had boats for years before old fart.  I never and will never lend our 2 4x4's, they are my babies, end of story.  Have lent less expensive items to step daughter, never came back, so no lending to anybody anymore.  Old fart is still wating on the wheel barrow we lent to the neighbour across the road 3 weeks ago hahahaah

Totally agree John, the few people I would lend the tinny to would not ask to borrow it. I would never ask to borrow someones boat either purely because if something does happen, you have to be willing to pay up. Lots of grey areas there too.  Eg: Say the engine overheated while a mate was borrowing and blew it up(so to speak). Is it the owners problem when he gets the boat back to you or do you have to front the costs to fix it for him. Arguments for both sides there. Was it due to the user at the time or just coincedence or due to lack of service. Its all good if nothing happens, but when it does happen it could jam a wedge into a good friendship for a longtime.

I have always lent my boats all the time ,Bottom line for me is my mates are my mates because they play by the same rules I do or else we wouldnt be mates , respect is the name of the game from 40k barra boats to 10k tinny's if there your mates and you trust them then theres no problem for me in my case.I saw comment about losing friendships ,sometimes shit happens and I wouldnt belive any of my mates would do anything deliberate to damage anything I lent them either a boat or a car or a electric drill at the end of the day you can always get a new boat  but how often do you meet someoen you can fish with hunt with go camping with do all the things you like with in smimste objects are just objects at the end of the day.

Jake P - your the man,

Nobody will lend there boat out willy nilly to everybody but if a good mate wants it for sure- otherwise they obviously aint a good mate.

A boat is just a boat, good mate`s will be there when ya need em, till the day you die.

Boomer.

And have in the past.

My father let us wild UNI rebels take the Deepwater28 and the Wavedancer23 (I recall that name, not certain) out to Rotto during end off year celebrations, and we lived off fish, squid and Crays, moored the boats at Jordie Bay. But there was a big leather belt at home, and also he supported our education, so he had a good tool or to for us to treasure the boat(s). The ability to use it and the trust shown was enough for us to even plan a beer drinking cleanup Party Day, and they ended up spit polished. Ie We cherished the girls!

Around here in Dampier, no way unless it was someone I knew very well, known he has the area sussed. If Mullows or others I know up here's boat broke down and they have promised some visiting mates a fish sure. I know the guy(s) and would trust them. Just not some best mate from Perth (even my very experienced brother) because to many things to hit up here with inexperience.

But then I take offense when deckies I invite pay for fuel etc. Its my treat and thats what I enjoy. They can buy me some beer etc and appreciated, and clean the bits I clean.
