Kalbarri boat fishing trip
Submitted by AlwaysFishin on Mon, 2013-03-25 18:02
Hey guys I'm planning another trip to Kalbarri from April 10-14. Been there a few times before but this time I'm taking up my 18 foot pacemaker. I'm aware of the dangers of the river mouth but as this will be the first time I've had the boat up there I'm not really sure on where to start fishing, so I was hoping someone might be able to help me out a little. I'm not asking for gps marks, but just some general areas to start looking. I'm hoping to target tuna and macks while trolling and the normal demersals bottom bashing. If anyone could please give me a heads up it would be much appreciated.
Edit: If anyone could give me any info as to what weather to expect for April would be good also.
Cheers, Jarrod

Hey mate, have only been boat
Hey mate, have only been boat fishing at Kalbarri once, hired one off Murchison boat hire and the bloke led us out (skippering another boat) through the passage and south, almost all the way to Wagoe. At a guess i'd say somewhere between 2-5 K's from the where the cliffs end/Wagoe starts he said "heres a good spot to troll for mackies". We had a double hookup instantly, only landed one. Trolled there for a while, had another run or 2 but nothing more boated. Then headed down to Wagoe and started trolling again, had a few more runs but again nothing boated (Missus was fighting something big for about 15 minutes before being busted off and screaming blue murder). Followed the 15m contour i think.
Anchored up over a lump, landed a little pinky around 50cm and some other random stuff, before calling quits and heading back due to breeze coming up. Ended up with a nice Mack that fed us for rest of the trip and had a pretty good day. Word of warning though, be VERY CAUTIOUS of them cray pots/ropes, they're absolutely everywhere along the cliffs, best to go a bit wide when travelling. good luck!

Thanks for your input
Thanks for your input Versus, much appreciated. I'll be sure to give those pot ropes a wide berth. Can you recall how long by boat it took you to get to the Wagoe area?

Would be around an hour I think, depends how fast u travel tho obviously; I was probably going a bit slow. Have a look on google maps to get an idea of distance.

That mouth of the Murchison
That mouth of the Murchison looks like it could get pretty hair coming through at time with a bit of swell running. You would want to watch the weather closey it changes within minutes up there.

Man I found that entrance
Man I found that entrance pretty scary. I watched it for a full day before I decided to have a go. The day I watched I saw two boats nearly go over, bugger me it was close but I think that the guys were not trimmed right or they just went too hard (or they were pissed and didnt know or care).
When I went through, eyes wide open and hand on the throttles. Once out all good and a quick run down to Wagoe to troll up some mackies which we found mainly right on the edge of the reef where it drops off to 15-17m. When we ran down we were out pretty wide looking for ground so no pots etc
Coming back in was a little easier.
Good Luck

ph
sent you a pm mate give me a buzz!
The rivermouth is 10 seconds of fun! round easter swells are down and wind is offshore! water atm is absolutely filthy so trolling will be a right off for a while! prob head down to wagoe where the water tends to clear up a bit more so than towards town and north. The rest well that's why god invented a sounder and chart plotter hehe! 14fthm 2 mile north of rivermouth!
