Jurien Bay Report

Gday All,

Hope you all had a good long wk end with plenty of fish, had a great wk end myself up in Jurien bay took the family and tub - bit of a read for a tuesday morning.

Me and a mate have been waiting to get up to Jurien bay for the last 5 years with a boat, its been a dream of both of ours, we would sit there on the beach morning and night trying to catch tailor and odd mullaway, well the time finally came when we could take a boat up to his holiday house in jurien bay, the anticipation starting about 3 weeks prior, i think we spent about 10 hours in the shed on Sat doing up rigs talking shit (all fishing), having a few beers and walking around not really knowing what else to do but stare at the fishing rods.

we both copped spray from the wifes " we will laugh our heads off if you dont catch anything" the reply was "dont bother getting anything lined up tomorrow night love, we are having fish" (whilst touching wood and crossing my fingers).

weather looked ok with 15 -20 knot easterlys with a 1.1 mtr swell so off we went at 6am, fk were we excited to get out there - the cruise wasnt to bad out the north passage with a bit of tricky nth west follwing sea, but got out in no time to spot on the 2nd bank about 30km out - as we put the anchor out the weather turned pair shape, the drift was so hard the anchor went straight under the boat and ripped of the transducer (great fkn start i though, mrs is going to kill me again), the seas wipped up with the wind and became quite dangerous with wall after wall of heavy seas and a couple of breakers over the boat we decided with out the transducer enough was enough and decided to go pot hunting.

We were sitting on about 8 knots due to swell and seas - it was definately the worst i have been in, was like a washing machine, not sure if anyone else was out in Jurien that morning but it was not a good ride, dont think i have concentrated so hard in my life - we were drenched.

As we got closer in the seas were dying and it became alot more pleasent, finally we can get some fishing in (we were not going home to the wifes without a fish) - drifted past a pot and decided to do a bit of drift with the jigs now we could atleast hold bottom, was hanging for leak and beer after shitting myself for the last 2 hours, so cracked a beer and lent over the side for a slash, BANG the mate gets a hook up first drift, beer and pss put on the backburner, in a flash captain dan with the gaff arrived, was a good fight for about 5 - 10 minutes slowing getting the big fellah in, up came the silver - you fkn beauty a nice pinky, i made sure i was not going to lose it gaffed the bastard so hard i landed ass up on the deck witht the fish flapping in my face - did not give a shit we were stoked, couple of high fives and a beer followed, very happy to land it on the jigs, something we had read alot about.

i got a nice blackass (50cm) which equalled a great feed that night, heads held high we had to head back (to my mates dissapointment) to grab the kids for a quick put around the bay.

so we get the kids out and anchor up around the little island next to the south passage on the south passage (in 2m water) burleyed up (we threw fkn everything out the boat that smelled) about 10 min passed the kids were over it and off they went in the cabin to do some colouring in - beauty another beer and bit of play on the small gear.

with the oil slick coving about 3/4 of the island we were bringing in everything, rays, birds, NW blowies - then a couple of big shadows crept past us FK ME its a sambo i yell out - sorry kids, bad word naughty daddy. me and my mate both fell over trying to scramble for the big rods that we had put away - gang hooks and mulies went straight out, BANG my mate was on - was all aboard the rocket express, stripped about 100 mtrs of his line and snapped under the boat, we hooked up another 4 times but they just kept snapping us off around, under the boat - they were atlest 10-15kg , was good fun though to actually see them smash the bait and just take off in 2 mtres of water.

sorry again if a bit long winded - but a fair bit happened in one day at jurien, what a great place to fish - cant wait to get up there again on a good day.

Awesome stuff Dan. Good to see you had some action and at least scored a couple of nice fish. We were out yesterday and the further out we went the worse it got so fished only for an hour but managed 2 nice Dhuies and a monster Blackarse. Slow boat to China for the ride in though. Back a the beach it was as flat as a pancake you wouldn't know how bad it was out there. Hope you can get up there again with some decent weather.

That one good fish can be the difference between a shit day and a great one, bet you were happy to get that snapper. Excuse my ignorance but I thought 15-20 knot winds is fairly strong (i.e. shithouse conditions?)

cheers Franke and Sea Kem - couple of dhuies and black arse is a good day out mate, yeah it was flat as about 5 - 10 but anything from that was terrible.

versus - yeah it would have been a miserable day without a couple of fish for sure, i knew it wasnt going to flash out there, but didnt think that bad - as uncle said its a leaning experience for the next time.
