Fads

Fads won't be going out this weekend as deployment was postphoned for a couple of reasons.

This was only confirmed last night.

That's what you want - hay?

Got the line, hasn't put it on a reel yet ... each time I take the line end to do the knot on the spool, it breaks ... so I walk off ... still got a week to think again

Fad Deployment

Thu, 2012-11-15 14:04

Does anyone know the reasoning behind putting the FADS out when they do?

It would make sense for me that they put them out in September when the weather is at its friendliest and gives an opportunity for fish to start congregating by the time the Demersal ban takes effect.

Also I think it would be worth posting up on a forum here when they are doing a workshop or something cause a lot guys are like me in that they are not keen to join a club but are more then happy to commit financially or physically to the FAD system.

Fad time is always my favourite time of the year.

The hot current isn't really

Thu, 2012-11-15 20:12

The hot current isn't really running in September, so no point putting them out earlier. Same with the retrieve, the current runs further and further out, missing the FADs line.

Hot Current

Thu, 2012-11-15 23:01

Hi Till,

Thanks for the response. Are you able to expand on the hot current? what sort of temperature are you looking for? is there a web site that shows the current and is it a major factor on dophinfish or is it more so for your other species?

Its called the Leeuwin

Fri, 2012-11-16 06:17

Its called the Leeuwin Current.

Its both good and bad news, it means we get a wide mix of species down the coast, but because the water is nutrient and oxygen poor, its also the poorest west-coast fishery in the world.

You can see it on the SST graphs online, its the hot licks that run down the coast. Last year and the year before were strong La Nina events, and they copped 26° off Rotto, its about 20° out there now and the temp on the coast itself can get down to 13° when the Capes Current sneaks inside the Leeuwin, pushing it wider.

The later the put them out

Thu, 2012-11-15 20:38

The later the put them out the better as it will take longer for the fish to be attracted and gives me awhile to heal up
