Did anyone actually catch anything out wide today? (sat)

Please make me and hoookt feel better by telling us how you all caught nothing today out wide too!

We both missed our chances dropping a Dollie each and the only fish landed was a rat sambo and ytk.
Nothing at all landed on the demersal front. Just weren't on today for us.

No!!!!!

Sat, 2012-02-11 22:30

2 x 20kg sambo, 1 undersize dhu and heaps of undesirables. Ugly conditions in a small boat and a deckie that spewed for 6 hours straight, I spent half that time trolling due to conditions.
Very average day

Managed four dhuies, only 1

Sat, 2012-02-11 23:12

Managed four dhuies, only 1 sized but was happy to get two on jigs considering the conditions. Also an underize pinky and some undesirables. On the way back had a troll behind the 3 mile trying for the elusive mr mac, 3 hook ups had the heart racing but turned out to be Bonito. Given the conditions was a reasonable day's fishing, even if we only got the one keeper.

Plenty

Sun, 2012-02-12 13:31

Plenty out there off Gero yesterday.

Caught heaps of everything except a Dhufish.

Bought home 2 Baldies and 2 Pinkies.

Trolled for about 5nm on the way in for zilch.

Water conditions were next to perfect. A great day to be on the briney.

We went out on my mates boat.

Sun, 2012-02-12 10:56

We went out on my mates boat. Hit the fads early for nothing, jigged the derwent for 1 rat sambo and then had the dollies come up to the boat for 2 hook ups and lost them both. Also tried the barges for nada and a few shallower spots south of rotto for only 1 rat ytk. That wind sure made it hard to hold bottom! A good 150+km travelled in the slop for nothing.

Jeeze, I feel better now!!!!

Sun, 2012-02-12 11:23

Jeeze, I feel better now!!!! At least we got a nice dhu that was nothing short of superb baked whole last night, fed 7 with a bit left over. We did a heap of trolling for nada except for one breif period where we finally came across bait and bang, two hits, but we could not be stuffed trlling around due to the slop and kept steaming homewards.

For the first time in 2 years we took Grayzees advice and took some squid along, and in desperation of not being able to effectively demersal jig in 40m, dropped some baited hooks down on heavy gear with huge sinkers.......apart from being no fun, all we did was catch two undersized dhu, one was dead on arrival, the other 50:50 at best...............and a few undersirables.....Not a fan of demersal bait fishing combined with the undersized release rules I must say. With the heavy gear you need to use, it is a struggle to bring up fish slow enough not the baratruma them totally....and we were very aware of this and tried to bring them up slow. The average punter with 50 lb braid whocranks the small fish up due to excitement is going to kill most undersized fish from +40m........."release" them, then  drop down to try and get their 2 size dhu......some times I think it would be better if you were made to keep the first 2 dhu's you catch regardless of size and then you must stop demersal fishing.......very hard to know whats best but I felt like a killer yesterday on heavy bottom bashing gear........with light jigging, all but the very biggest dhu's go back very strongly and the by catch is very minimal.

We then went back to PE2 jigging and then got the size dhu. No more bait for me except for kg's.

hey John.sounds like a few

Sun, 2012-02-12 19:34

hey John.

sounds like a few did it hard and the dreaded north in the wind was evident.

I'm really out to try to bring something home in the esky every time now, with the new arrival and limited fishing time .   After chatting with a few guys , I relented myself and started taking bait again.

I Always start on jigs and plastics, but as you know , you definately have days where artificials aren't getting touched ,  then i'll put down a drift bait or if the current is ripping , the token bottom bashing rig.

just found I was staying away from what worked on the day , due to the line of thinking that suggests your cheating by using bait.

I reckon you probably can get a wider variety of species more easily on bait too.

(you can still make it fun  by not using a 15kg broomhandle and tld25)

I honestly don't think i've ever pulled up a fish that was dead on arrival.   that's some fine skulldraggin'

i dont agree with that at all

Sun, 2012-02-12 18:15

i dont agree with that at all john.

i fish 99% of the time with bait, heavy braid and a reasonable sinker 16oz(heavier if needed) anywhere from 40-60mtrs, we have pulled many small dhu's up and only 1 or 2 needing the release weight, most swim of strong on there own.

even a few size dhu's have gone back strong because we have already got our 2 for the boat

for example would be the day recently out with ben(goodz) from memory 9 dhu's that day and i think we put 1 back on the release weight, and yes some were taken on jigs as well.

we got 3 dhu's on friday mate, all on bait in the 40-60mtr 1 kept and the other 2 released with no weight

nothing wrong with bait fishing mate but its still fun in better wether though.

each to there own i spose

cheers

Yeah, I was probably being

Sun, 2012-02-12 19:45

Yeah, I was probably being harsh and yes, I did skull drag the dhu up....very poor form I agree.....I was just not used to using heavy gear. Nothing against bait fishing, you can definatley cach a wider variety of fish, no doubt, and for sure bait works on days when artificals dont. Baits definatley come out for KG's, sand whiting and the like, and if I knew a good baldy spot I would fish bait for sure!!!!!!

But after all the mess on the boat, smelly hands and dragging lots of "undesirable" fish fromt the depths just to release them (and no matter what anyone says, dragging something up from 40m is not going to be that good for it) I guess I amd just more comfortable with artificials for metro demersals.

My point was not against bait, it was actually questioning the logic of the undersize fish release given that a lot of of them will die with the average punter ripping them up........not sure what the betr alternative would be??

I will be fishing bait again for sure, probably just not for dhuies.

Sorry for the offence, none intended.

We had a really slow day in

Sun, 2012-02-12 09:59

We had a really slow day in the 40's, only managed a 47cm dhui on the plastic and that was it. Didn't get much bites on the bait either.

4.5kg dhui

Sun, 2012-02-12 10:01

what crappy conditions! I scored a baby dhuie, and was getting despondent - but then my (female) passenger hauled in TWO nice sized baldies... Her fiance got a sweep and a skippy. I got a 4.5kg dhui and my first ever amberjack that was 4.8kg. Once again the girls just creamed the guys... I was well pleased with my catch... not so pleased with the sore muscles today from the pounding into the slop to get out there! And got home to a call from son who wanted to share his haul of crabs from the night before. A Saturday doesn't get much better than that.  :)

We went out behind swbank in

Sun, 2012-02-12 10:10

We went out behind swbank in the 50-60s fish weren't biting and we got sick of winding up the house bricks needed to hold bottom so we tried a few shallower spots ended up with two duhies a baldie and two 50cm king George pretty good day considering the conditions

Sorry Goodz and Marko

Sun, 2012-02-12 17:21

Caught a Dhuie, Tailor, Snapper, Baldie and Coral Trout.

Unfortunately after that I woke up a few km's past the wreck, howling NWester, fish on the sounder but not a bite.

Apart from the bite on my hand from Mr Tailor we caught earlier on and we were going to use as Live Bait.

Also glad we were not the only ones.

Makes me enjoy the good days even more.

OK

We caught 2 reasonable sized dhuies and a nice flathead on pirates south of Direction Bank, the wind was up from forecast and it was difficult to get much bottom time.

No luck mackie trolling in close along the reef.

The amount of boats lined up at 2 Rocks ramp at 5.30am was a sight to see, will post up some pics.

Now I feel a whole lot better about spending 8 hours out there yesterday in the slop and wind catching stuff all. Very despondant at the moment as the Dhuie drought continues.....

Exactly the same thing

Sun, 2012-02-12 21:13

Exactly the same thing happended last year about the same time......could the common theme be high water temperature? Last year there was a strong La Nina, same deal this year.

We saw a lot of good fish on the sounder on Saturday, at places where we have got some cracker fish in December, and could not entice a bite........very frustrating indeed but it does seem to be a common theme lately........funniest thing was we bagged a nice dhu on flat ground just drifting aimlessly blind jigging after we gave up resetting the drift due to the rediculously fast drift.......

I guess the good part is we get sub tropical species like mackerel, yellowfin tuna, dollies and marlin.
