I had four stolen about 4 years ago, put me off until this season. If people aren't poaching out of your pots they're stealing your pots. When mine were stolen they were all brand new that season. Good wooden ones two floats on each and new ropes. It was an investment that would have taken a couple of seasons to even out, because of the undesirables I did my dough within a month WANKERS!!!
I've given up this year due to the poachers. We had an awesome bombie we were setting them on but some Ahole kept poaching the crays. I know this cause he was rebaiting them funnily enough with Scalies. He knew we only pulling once a week. Shithouse!
I would stay away from James Service Mate. I gave up on it a couple of years ago after continual frustration. The last time I pulled a pot there it had two empty stubbie bottles & an empty burbon & cola can shoved into the bait basket. Hows that for arrogance? Set your pots away from the main traffic areas. The 5 fathom is working for me at present.
They staked out pot thieves up at Seabird for three days and nailed them red handed in the end which was a good result. But need them back up there to sort out the new poaching problem.
Sounds like the principle behind speed cameras which I agree with but am not convinced 100% it works. Guess that's why they actually have them to catch those with no regard for the rules/law!
I had one vanish from just south of penguin island a couple of years ago. I know it was nicked because it was where I dived and there were no weights left on the bottom so it didn't float away.
Last year we had one go from Herring Bay with out a trace. Didn't catch a thing though in three other pots (two licenses)
This year back at Pt Peron. Had a dive yesterday and plenty of littlies around so we'll see.
I put mine out off of Ocean Reef and have heard others comment about poachers. You shouldn't have to go out stupid depths to place your pots. Fisheries have a hard enough time keeping AHOLES in check without having to babysit our pots. It's a criminal matter and the police should be dealing with it, after all it is theft.
I used to find them all the time while diving, some looked like they had been down a while and some looked quite new and just about all of them looked like a prop had got the ropes. A lot of people use about 30m of rope in less than 10m of water or drop them in the channels out from the boat ramps. these people then wonder where their pots have gone, usually dragged 50-100m or more by a boat. I have seen a few boaties untangling pot ropes from around their legs.
Not on pot thieves, but whilst on the topic of pot etiquette, I was fanging around from the Point Peron ramp south, past Point John and Point Peron a few years ago, and in a fresh easterly breeze, knew that I would be safe to pass to the western side of the pot floats due to the hang.
Whilst weaving between the floats (perhaps a little too close) I narrowly missed a rope which was dangling the wrong way. On a double take, one pot float had two ropes off it! Dodgy buggers!
Luckily for me I didn’t get it wrapped around the prop but I have seen the same thing offshore whilst racing. Has anyone else seen it?
As one of the other comments noted, whilst diving, we generally find a few per year which are jammed under an overhang with the rope chaffed off just above it.
With no id on the pots there is no way to identify who owns them.
fisheries officers confiscate non conforming fishing gear and dep of trans officers remove gear that is in a inappropriate location. I don't think they notify you that your gear is been taken though.

Thats why he's undercover!
If He's under cover no one knows who he is and if they dont do it for fear of being watched then it's a good thing.

True, the threat can be greater than the actual policing at times, if ppl are aware of it they may not do it.

pots are dropped
Yes,..Some pots are dropped in the approach channels of the marina with a milkbottle or a single brown float.
Sadly boaties do not always see these and run over them, causing all sorts of problems.

when there are specific
when there are specific reports of jerking pots, Fisheries will also place large crays in a given pot, marked with UV marker.
Then its a double whammy for the pot jerker-filmed and then caught with a marked cray from the pot.
Give a man a mask, and he'll show you his true face...
The older you get the more you realize that no one has a f++king clue what they're doing.
