Advice - Monkey Mia
Submitted by Hovis on Wed, 2013-01-02 20:22
First time post so any help advice would be appreciated.
Off to Monkey Mia / Shark Bay area next week and taking the boat (5.7m).
Safety first; are there any local volunteer sea rescue radio services to log on to whilst on the water. If so what channel and their hours of operation would be good to know.
Secondly; gear - any ideas what to take, what local species to target / expect. Only ever fished North Metro before so it will be new ground and only had the boat since May.
Third; what's the ground like generally (not asking for GPS marks so your crown jewels are safe), distance to good ground - fuel conscious.
Thanks.
Steve.

Monkey Mia
Be prepared to find snapper, snapper and more snapper.
Have had awesome success but be prepared to venture as far as 20-25km from the ramp.
Drift baiting is the answer to getting past the small pinkies! Once you find them.
Light gear is the go.... Even for their size I think the snapper are a little lazy compared to the local fish in perth.

not much ground to look for
not much ground to look for at the monkey mia side, just sound around and look for fish marks on the sounder. The deep trenches between weed banks and sand flats are the best place to both bottom fish and troll. but you wll find a few baldies in the weed.
i will post again if i can think of anything else, brains a bit fuzy atm.

PM's
Thanks for the reply's and PM's recieved the information has been both helpful and appreciated.
As for the Fisheries Officers not got a problem with that - if business is slow for them they can come out on the boat and monitor first hand - perhaps even show me some marks.
Thanks again all.
Steve.
